【訃報】プログラミング言語「Pascal」の開発者ニクラウス・ヴィルト氏が89歳で死去、ソフトウェア設計のパイオニアとして複数のプログラミング言語を考案し1984年にチューリング賞を受賞
プログラミング言語「Pascal」の開発者であるニクラウス・ヴィルト氏が2024年1月1日に亡くなりました。89歳でした。

ヴィルト氏は1963年にカリフォルニア大学バークレー校で情報工学の博士号を取得。その後、スタンフォード大学やチューリッヒ大学で助教授を務めながら1965年に「Euler」、1966年に「PL360」という2種類のプログラミング言語を開発しました。そして、1970年には教育用プログラミング言語として「Pascal」を発表しました。
Very sad to hear. ???? He made many enormous contributions to the field of computing. Pascal was the first language I used seriously (initially on the UCSD p-System and later via Turbo Pascal), and I got my hands on this great book that he wrote when I was in middle school.

ヴィルト氏はPascalを発表した後も「Modula」や「Oberon」といったプログラミング言語を開発し続け、1984年には計算機科学分野において多大な功績を残した人物に贈られるチューリング賞を受賞しました。また、ヴィルト氏が残した「ソフトウェアは、ハードウェアの高速化よりも急速に低速化する」という格言は「ヴィルトの法則」として広く知れ渡っています。
理化学研究所計算科学研究センターのセンター長を務める松岡聡氏はX(旧Twitter)に「ヴィルト氏の研究によって、機械語から現代的なプログラミング言語への発展が成された」と投稿し、ヴィルト氏の功績をたたえています。

また、Googleでフォントレンダリングなどについて研究するRaph Levien氏は「13歳のときにヴィルト氏に激励された際の写真」を投稿し、ヴィルト氏への感謝を示しています。
