米携帯キャリア3位のSprint 、ソフトバンクによる買収交渉を認める。総額1兆円超の可能性

ソフトバンクが米国の携帯キャリア Sprint Nextel の買収を検討しているとのうわさについて、Sprint 側が交渉中の事実を認める声明を公表しました。Sprint はAT&T と Verizon に次ぐ米国三位の携帯キャリア。

Sprint の声明前に報じられた「詳しい筋」情報は、ソフトバンクが新株の購入とTOBを通じてSprint 株の約70%を取得し傘下に収めるべく交渉を続けているというものでした。総額は128億ドル、約1兆円にも上る可能性があるとされています。報道を受けた Sprint 側の声明 (下に掲載) はごく短く、ソフトバンクによる大型の投資について、ソフトバンクと交渉中であることを認める内容。ただし最終的に取り引きがおこなわれるかどうかも、その条件についても、また Sprint の経営権への影響についても現時点では未定であり、今後はなんらかの合意に至るまでコメントを控えるとしています。

ソフトバンクといえば、先日のイー・アクセス買収で「契約数国内2位」を宣言したばかり。三位という言葉はきらい、いずれは一位を目指すと語っていた孫社長のソフトバンクが米国三位で財務的にも思わしくないスプリントを買って直接的にどう嬉しいのかはよく分かりませんが、米国の携帯サービス業界はスプリントの下の4位T-Mobile と5位　Metro PCSが合併に向けて合意するなど再編が続いている状況。端末レベルの話はさておき、大手の経営権と周波数帯を取得して米国市場にプレーヤーとして参加することで、孫正義の野望・全国版ならぬ世界版を本格的に開始する意思表示なのかもしれません。

Sprint Confirms Discussions with Softbank on a Possible Transaction



OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), October 11, 2012 - Sprint (NYSE: S) today confirmed that it is currently engaged in discussions with Softbank regarding a potential substantial investment by Softbank in Sprint.
